Canyon Lake is in Comal County, Texas, and is part of the San Antonio–New Braunfels Metropolitan Statistical Area. Canyon Lake is located on the Guadalupe River, 25 miles northwest of New Braunfels and 35 miles southwest of San Antonio. The town is situated on the shores of Canyon Lake, a reservoir created by the Canyon Lake Dam. The town was founded in 1964, after the completion of the Canyon Lake Dam. The dam was built to provide flood control and water for irrigation and municipal use. The town was originally named "Lakeview", but the name was changed to "Canyon Lake" in 1966.
