2022 Maverick vs. Santa Cruz

2022 Ford Maverick vs Santa Cruz

2022 Ford Maverick VS. Hyundai Santa Cruz

Buyers looking for a quality truck know that Ford is the leader of the pack. And they also know that Griffith Ford Seguin is the place to go for a massive selection of new Fords and quality used options. So they are happy to make the drive from their homes in New Braunfels or Stockdale when they want to learn more about the 2022 Maverick. And what they are learning is that there is not much competition out there for the Maverick other than the Santa Cruz, which is of a similar size but not really the Maverick's equal.

Space And Size

Both the Maverick and the Santa Cruz are only offered in a four-door crew cab with seating for five. The Maverick offers a larger box at 4.5 feet in length, while the Santa Cruz measures only 4.3 feet long. For added capacity, the Maverick has tie-down points in the tailgate to allow drivers to secure a larger load with the tailgate partially lowered. One of the innovative features offered by both small trucks is a 110-volt outlet in the bed.

Power And Efficiency

The Maverick gives drivers the choice of a hybrid power plant or a traditional gas engine. The hybrid 2.5 liter 4-cylinder delivers 162 horsepower with a 94-kilowatt electric motor and battery pack. Going all gas, drivers get a 2.0 liter 4-cylinder that puts out 250 horsepower. The standard transmission for the Maverick is an 8-speed automatic. The Santa Cruz also gives buyers the choice of two engines. Both are gas, with the first being a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder that delivers 191 horsepower. The second is a turbocharged 2.5-liter offering 281 horsepower. Ford does not win the horsepower challenge, but it offers small truck owners far superior fuel efficiency. The best the Santa Cruz has to offer is 23 mpg, while the Maverick comes in at an impressive and economical 40 mpg.

Safety Technology

Both small trucks offer great safety features. However, the significant difference becomes apparent in the price you will pay for your safety. The top-end safety features are all included in the $25k-ish price of Maverick, but to get the same amount of safety features in the Santa Cruz, you will need to shell out about $10k more.

Coming Down To The Bottom Line

Price is a critical factor in small trucks. And Ford appears to have been very conscious of this fact, while Hyundai seemed to ignore it. The base model Maverick comes in at an affordable $19,995. In comparison, the Santa Cruz starts at $23,990. That four grand or so is a huge price jump for a very similar vehicle. In addition, the Santa Cruz only includes some of the latest technology and safety features on their Limited Edition Santa Cruz, which has a sticker price of $39,720. The top of the line Maverick offers much the same features but can be yours for an astounding $14,230 LESS than the Santa Crus, or $25,490.
